Train-the-Trainer (TFT)

Course Overview

 The Train-the-Trainer (TFT) program is a professional development course designed for maritime professionals who wish to become instructors, trainers, or assessors in the maritime training sector.

The course focuses on developing the instructional, assessment, and course-design competencies required to deliver modern competency-based maritime training aligned with international and Canadian regulatory expectations.

This program is delivered fully online through HS Academy’s Learning Management System and includes lectures, group workshops, practical exercises, and teaching simulations.

The course is developed in accordance with:

  • STCW Convention and Code (Regulation I/6 & Section A-I/6)
  • IMO Model Courses (including instructor training methodologies)
  • Transport Canada expectations for maritime training institutions
  • HS Academy Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015) 

This course is a professional development program and is not a Transport Canada-approved course.

 

Course Duration & Delivery

Total duration: 32 hours

  • 18 hours of theory
  • 14 hours of practical workshops and teaching exercises

Delivery mode: Online / Virtual classroom (live + interactive)

Maximum class size: 20 participants

The course requires active participation, teamwork, and practical teaching exercises.

 

Who Should Apply

This program is designed for individuals who intend to work as:

  • Maritime instructors
  • Trainers
  • Assessors
  • Maritime subject-matter experts transitioning to teaching roles
     

Applicants must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Demonstrate interest in teaching or training
  • Possess relevant maritime or technical knowledge
  • Be able to communicate effectively in the language of instruction

Holding a Transport Canada Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Proficiency is recommended but not mandatory. 


Course Objectives

The TFT program prepares participants to:

  • Apply adult learning principles in maritime training
  • Plan and deliver competency-based training aligned with STCW
  • Develop lesson plans and training materials
  • Design maritime courses using the IMO Model Course methodology
  • Apply fair and reliable assessment techniques
  • Operate within a maritime training Quality Management System

  1. Maritime Training Framework & International Conventions
  2. STCW Convention & Competency-Based Training
  3. Planning an Effective Learning Environment
  4. Training Aids & Instructional Technologies
  5. Instructional Techniques & Teaching Activities
  6. Lesson Planning & Learning Outcomes
  7. Evaluation of Teaching & Learning
  8. Maritime Course Design
  9. Introduction to Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015)
     

Participants complete practical exercises including:

  • Micro-teaching sessions
  • Lesson plan development
  • Assessment design
  • Course development workshops

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Deliver competency-based maritime training
  • Apply STCW instructional and assessment techniques
  • Design and evaluate maritime training programs
  • Conduct fair and effective trainee assessments
  • Prepare professional lesson plans and teaching sessions

Assessment & Certification

Participants must successfully complete:

  • Continuous assessment and practical exercises
  • A written examination
  • A practical teaching demonstration
  • Final instructor assessment interview

Graduates receive: HS Academy Course Completion Certificate

This certificate confirms successful completion of the instructor development program and does not replace Transport Canada approval

Transport Canada does not approve Train-the-Trainer (TFT) courses. This program is a professional development course delivered under the HS Academy Services Inc. Quality Management System. It is designed to align with STCW instructional standards and Transport Canada instructor expectations 


 This course is intended for maritime professionals who want to become instructors, trainers, or assessors in the maritime training sector.

Typical participants include:

  • Deck officers and engineers
  • Maritime and port professionals
  • Maritime subject-matter experts
  • Professionals transitioning into training roles


 No. A Transport Canada certificate is recommended but not required.
Participants must have relevant subject-matter knowledge and an interest in teaching or training. 


 Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Course Completion Certificate issued by HS Academy Services Inc.

This certificate confirms professional instructor training but does not replace Transport Canada approval.
