The Training for Trainers (TFT) program is a 32-hour professional development course designed to prepare maritime and technical professionals to become effective instructors, trainers, and assessors.

The program combines teaching methodology with maritime-specific instructor development, enabling participants to develop the skills required to plan training, deliver instruction, assess learner performance, and contribute to continuous improvement within a structured training environment.

The course follows a competency-based training approach, emphasizing practical instructional ability rather than theoretical knowledge alone.

6 Hours – Maritime Knowledge & Regulatory Framework

Focused on the maritime training environment, including the role of IMO, the STCW Convention and Code, competency-based maritime training, instructor and assessor responsibilities, and the regulatory context surrounding maritime education.

26 Hours – Teaching Methodology

Focused on adult learning, instructional planning, training aids, teaching techniques, lesson-plan development, assessment and evaluation, course design, and practical instructional delivery.

The TFT program has been developed with reference to:

• STCW Convention, 1978, as amended
• STCW Code, including Section A-I/6 – Training and Assessment
• IMO Model Course 2.03 – Training Course for Instructors
• Applicable Canadian marine training requirements and guidance
• HS Academy Quality Management System (QMS)

The program is delivered under the institution's controlled training and quality-management framework.

This course is particularly suitable for experienced professionals who are currently involved in—or considering transitioning into—training, instruction, mentoring, or assessment roles.

Participants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have sufficient knowledge or professional experience in the subject area they intend to teach
• Have an interest or intention to work as an instructor, trainer, or assessor
• Be able to communicate effectively in the language of instruction
• Be capable of participating in live online training and practical instructional activities

Holding a maritime Certificate of Competency, Certificate of Proficiency, or other relevant professional qualification is recommended where applicable but is not a general admission requirement for the TFT program.

The course is structured around eight core areas:

1. Maritime Instructor, Trainer & Assessor Framework
Understand the role of maritime instructors and assessors, IMO's role in maritime training, major maritime conventions, and the wider maritime training environment.

2. STCW & Competency-Based Maritime Training
Understand the STCW Convention and Code, competency tables, learning outcomes, performance criteria, assessment criteria, and competency-based training principles.

3. Planning an Effective Learning Environment
Understand adult-learning principles, communication, learner differences, motivation, and the creation of an effective training environment.

4. Training Aids
Learn how to select and effectively use appropriate instructional and audiovisual resources.

5. Effective Use of Instructional Activities
Apply lectures, discussions, demonstrations, case studies, role-playing, simulations, group work, e-learning, mentoring, workshops, and other instructional techniques.

6. Preparing a Subject-Related Lesson Plan
Develop structured lesson plans with measurable learning outcomes, appropriate teaching methods, training activities, and assessment strategies.

7. Evaluation of Teaching & Learning
Develop fair and appropriate assessment methods, identify evidence of learning, provide feedback, and use assessment results to improve training.

8. Course Design
Understand how competencies, learning outcomes, instructional content, assessment, and quality-management requirements are integrated into the design of a training program.

This is a live instructor-led course.

It is not a self-paced or pre-recorded program.

Participants interact directly with instructors and other trainees through:

• Live presentations
• Guided discussions
• Group exercises
• Case studies
• Practical instructional activities
• Question-and-answer sessions
• Micro-teaching exercises

The class size is limited to five participants to support interaction, individual participation, and instructor feedback.

Participants must have:

• A reliable internet connection
• Computer or suitable device
• Working camera
• Working microphone
• Access to the designated live-training platform
• A quiet and distraction-free learning environment

Participants are expected to keep their cameras available during live sessions, and camera use is required for interactive activities and assessments such as micro-teaching.

100% attendance is required.

Participants must actively participate in scheduled training activities, exercises, discussions, and assessments to successfully complete the program.

Participant performance is evaluated through a combination of:

• Participation in training activities
• Group exercises and discussions
• Practical instructional activities
• Micro-teaching
• Final competency-based case study

Participants must demonstrate their ability to:

• Establish appropriate learning outcomes
• Structure a training session
• Select suitable instructional methods
• Select appropriate training aids
• Develop an assessment approach
• Apply competency-based training principles

The assessment is designed to evaluate the participant's ability to apply instructional methodology in practice, not simply recall theoretical information.

Participants who:

• Meet the attendance requirement
• Actively participate in required training activities
• Complete the required practical exercises
• Successfully complete the final case study

Training for Trainers (TFT) is a professional development program delivered under the HS Academy Quality Management System.

Note: The TFT program is not a Transport Canada-approved or Transport Canada-endorsed course.

Completion of the program does not independently constitute approval by Transport Canada as a maritime instructor, trainer, or assessor. Where Transport Canada approval or recognition is required for a particular instructional role or approved maritime course, the individual's education, professional qualifications, Certificate of Competency where applicable, maritime experience, teaching experience, and other applicable requirements remain subject to review by Transport Canada.
